BACKGROUND

These reproduction U.S. large cents were minted by Gallery Mint and Striker Token and Medal from 1994 through 2007. Coins were made to the specific size and alloy of the originals and all specimens were engraved and struck using traditional hand-crafted methods. All dies were engraved by Ron Landis. All coins have the word COPY stamped on either the obverse or reverse as listed. For ease of viewing and description, this list of large cents has been broken into two groups: General Issues and Archive Set Specimens.

Group 1: General Issues This lists includes both "open" and "closed" issues of GMM/Striker reproduction large cents. "Open" means the exact coin type was listed as "for sale" until the final day of operation. Mintages on these open-ended, struck-to-order pieces ranges from the hundreds into the 8,000 to 10,000 range, the upper limit for most GMM mintages. "Closed" means the coin had a set, limited number of coins struck, with no further coins minted past that pre-set number. Several "closed" pieces are offered in this sale.

The Issue Price column lists the original asking price of the specified coin at the time of its initial release. Note that this price was often raised over the 13+ years of operation to reflect increases in manufacturing costs and raw materials including bullion. Further, several "closed" issues (such as the 1793 Chain cent) were sold out before the coins were even released. Many of these closed issues have since increased significantly in value on the secondary market.

Coins listed with "brown" toning (described below) were never issued by either GMM or Striker and thus have no original issue price. These coins were the remaining "seconds" inventory that have been skillfully toned to appear like seasoned copper. Brown coins command less of a premium and are about a third of the price of an original, bright red, copper large cent. Just like in real life.

The QTY column lists the number of coins remaining in Striker inventory. Another way of looking at this is to think of this as the number of this coin left in the world. If the Quantity is blank, it means more than ten pieces of this particular coin remain in stock.

Group 2: Archive Set Specimens This lists includes a select group of coins from one of only ten Gallery Mint Archive Sets. None of these coins have ever been listed before. As described more fully here, these coins were one of the first ten struck at the beginning of each new production run. In general, these are some of the nicest GMM/Striker coins in existence. The dies were brand new, the strike was crisp and full, the fields were nicely polished and the red copper color still blooms today, over a decade after their minting.

This group is also characterized by rarity. In most cases, there is but a single example for sale. Furthermore, in several instances, coins were saved bearing designs that were rejected once they were seen "in the flesh". This is the only place to obtain several of these such rarities. As can be seen from the list, there is also a lot of minor variations among these coins: with or without that leaf, low or high date, this many versus that many berries, or whatever variety Ron and Joe were reproducing for that particular trial piece. The sub-varieties in general represent an unplowed field in GMM numismatics, as many of these types were not widely publicized.

When the condition of the flip still allows it, all Archive Set Specimens are sold in their original holders with a GMM insert containing the hand-written inventory number matching the description below. Because only acetate flips without PVC were used in storing the coins, some of the holders have split and may have to be discarded for shipment, but the original flip will still be used in a new holder if necessary.

With that background, the following description of these premium Archive Set specimen commences with one of the most popular GMM "Closed" set ever issued: the 1793 Chain cent.

TONING

The definition of Red, Red/Brown and Brown is as follows:

Red means full original mint luster with little or no toning.

Red/Brown are coins that still have most of their mint luster but that have started to turn brown, spot or have an impaired finish. R/B coins have been reduced in price from Red coins.

Brown are coins that have been artificially treated after the minting process to give them a rich, chocolate color. All coins were processed at the same time and all have the same basic chocolate coloration. They look just like any nicely toned old copper coin.

Please note that despite the toning, these are all nice, full-strike, uncirculated coins.

COPY STAMP

All coins are stamped with the word "COPY" on either the obverse or reverse as indicated. This stamped is required by the Hobby Protection Act of 1973.

Cherry-Picker Tidbit: Most GMM/Striker collectors wanted to display their coin with the obverse side up, so they requested the COPY stamp to be on the coin's reverse. As a consequence, GMM/Striker coins with COPY stamped on the obverse are at least 10 times rarer than those with the stamp on the reverse! (This does not apply to the Bar Cent, the 1804 Dollar and a few other coins where the COPY stamp was embedded in the reverse die itself, not a later counter-stamp). The obverse COPY coins are also priced much cheaper in this close-out sale. So, rarer and cheaper. Hmmm. Think about it.

ORDERING INFORMATION
